ABSTRACT

Natural souvenirs collection has been identified as a driving force in biodiversity and habitat degradation of tropical marine ecosystems. This work considers this phenomenon in the Mediterranean region taking Sardinia (Italy), one of the most renowned tourism destinations, as a case study. The biological material seized at Cagliari-Elmas Airport (years 2019–2020: 138 kg) was analyzed: 199 taxa were identified, gastropods (112 species, 7866 pieces) and bivalves (63 species, 34,218 pieces) resulted the most represented classes. Twenty-two protected species were found in the tourists' luggage including Patella ferruginea and Pinna nobilis, the invertebrates most threatened with extinction in the Mediterranean Sea. This study demonstrates that the illegal collection of natural mementos is common in Sardinia, thus its relevance is not limited to tropical regions. Regulation, enforcement and compliance shortcomings emerged, highlighting the importance of strengthening stakeholders' collaboration for a deeper insight on this phenomenon and implementing effective conservation strategies.

ABSTRACT

In Costa Rica, as in other countries, vulnerability and marginalization experienced by small-scale artisanal fishermen, fisherwomen, and mollusk collectors are the result of the absence of a human rights‐based approach to marine conservation and development in the coastal areas. Usually non-formality, absence of tenure and access rights, bad health services, and low education compared to other productive sectors are part of what fisherfolks experience. This commentary shares how working in a long-term and integral way with these communities and incorporating a human rights‐based approach strengthens the contributions that the sector provides toward the sustainable use of the fishing resource of their marine territories with dignity, equity, and justice, especially in the context of SDG 14, the Ocean Decade, and 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. Born during the COVID pandemic, the initiative of a fair and equitable Sea Market for the fishing products of these small-scale communities supported by CoopeSoliDar RL and the Marine Responsible Fishing areas and marine territories of life network in Costa Rica is today a concrete example of how a fair and just market can contribute positively to the objectives of sustainable development and the fundamental elements contained in the Convention on Biological Diversity, preservation of the natural environment, sustainable use, and fair and equitable distribution of benefits.

ABSTRACT

Based on extensive new material, 2088 valves resulting from search sampling of ~500 kg of sediment, the Pliocene chiton biodiversity of the Mondego Basin (Portugal) is reassessed. Twelve species were identified, assigned to seven genera. Eight species are new for the Pliocene of Portugal, as well as two of the genera: Hanleya, Acanthochitona. Two taxa are described as new: Ischnochiton loureiroi n. sp. and Lepidochitona rochae n. sp. Until now, the polyplacophoran European Neogene record was too poorly known to be of help in generating a clear picture of the Miocene to present-day biogeography of the group. This new wealth of data from western Iberia, in conjunction with recent data from the Loire Basin Upper Miocene assemblages (France), allows clarification the Late Miocene to Recent eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean biogeography of the Polyplacophora. The northern range of warm-water northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Polyplacophora experienced a sharp contraction since, at least, Late Miocene to Early Pliocene times. Warm-water chiton species represented in the Upper Miocene of the Loire Basin of NE France (European-West African Province) and the Pliocene of the Mondego Basin of central-west Portugal (Pliocene French-Iberian Province) are today confined to the southern Mediterranean-Moroccan Molluscan Province.UUID: http://zoobank.org/a2a550c0-caed-449a-aa45-9492c45f882e

ABSTRACT

Due to COVID-19, many scientists have to work remotely and have limited access to physical reference collections. This situation has highlighted that providing online digital content is considered one of the most effective solutions. To make materials of reference collection more accessible to scientists or researchers, we here report the Rumphius expeditions (1973 – 1980) materials to Indonesia that still remain at the Ambon Research Station or now become reference collection of Centre for Deep-Sea Research, LIPI-Ambon, Indonesia. The morphological analyses of fish, crustacea, and mollusc collected during the Rumphius expeditions revealed: 34 species from 23 different genera of fish;21 species from 19 different genera of crustacea;and 60 species from 42 different genera of mollusc. This study demonstrates the value of reference collections as a resource in marine biology science and the important role of archivists in this current pandemic situation.

ABSTRACT

Molluscum contagiosum (MC) and warts are common viral infections of the skin. Data regarding the prevalence of MC and verruca in swimmers are very poor and lacking in the literature. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of Molluscum Contagiosum (MC) and warts cases among young competitive swimmers participating in Greek swimming clubs. Of 244 swimmers enrolled in this study, 12.3% reported MC and 43% warts, during their swimming career, diagnosed and treated by dermatologists. There was no difference between sexes for MC but diagnoses of warts were higher in females. Axillae and trunk were the most common sites of primary infection for MC but warts mainly appeared on the soles. The incidence of MC and warts in swimmers who use outdoor facilities was higher. In our study, the incidence of warts and MC in Greek swimmers is considered high. Moist walking surfaces, placing towels on locker room benches, and sharing equipment are behaviors that cause infections. An early diagnosis of warts and MC lesions must be implemented in every swimmer through dermatological examination. Taking proper measures for reducing the risk of warts and MC transmission in Greek swimmers is mandatory.

ABSTRACT

The presence of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater pose the question of whether this new pandemic virus could be released into watercourses and potentially continue to finally reach coastal waters. In this study, we employed two bivalve molluscan species from the genus Ruditapes as sentinel organisms to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 signals in the marine coastal environment. Estuarine sediments from the natural clam banks were also analyzed. Viral RNA was detected by RT-qPCR, targeting IP4, E and N1 genomic regions. Positive samples were also subjected to a PMAxx-triton viability RT-qPCR assay in order to discriminate between intact and altered capsids, obtaining indirect information about the viability of the virus. SARS-CoV-2 RNA traces were detected in 9/12 clam samples by RT-qPCR, from which 4 were positive for two different target regions. Viral quantification ranged from
